   Interview Do’s and Dont’s

by Laycee Moss

Going in for an interview can be very stressful. You know     you are being judged on your performance and you know that one mistake can cost you the job, but forget about all of that and just relax. Here are some do’s and don’ts that will help you in your job interview and give you a step above the competition.

1.       Do your research.

Know the company! I cannot stress this enough. If you do not know what the company is about or what you are applying for, then you shouldn’t be there in the first place. You are just wasting yours and the company’s time. Research potential interview questions and prepare for them. Also, look over your resume. Make sure nothing on it is fuzzy or misleading.

2.       Don’t dress inappropriate.

You have probably heard this multiple times, but it surprises me how many people still do this. It’s imperative to look professional and polished. Look the part! You attire may vary based on the position you are applying for, but it is important to look well-dressed and put together.

3.       Do practice.

Practice potential interview questions. Be prepared to talk yourself up. Know your skills and how they will work towards the job itself. Have someone help you with a practice interview and tell them to get you constructive criticism, that way you can improve your chances.

4.       Don’t arrive late.

This is your first impression; don’t make it a bad one by making it seem as if you don’t have any time management.

5.       Do have confidence.

You are selling you! Show you are worth their time and effort by smiling and showing them who you are and talking up your skills and talents. Tell them what you are proud of and when asked about your skills, show that you are what they are looking for.

6.       Don’t forget to turn your phone off.

Better yet, don’t even take your phone. There is nothing more embarrassing and distracting then your cell phone going off. And that won’t be the only thing that goes off, the employer’s interest in you will too.

7.       Do smile.

This one ties in with confidence. Look like you want to be there. They are giving you the opportunity to work for their company, show that you want the job!

8.       Don’t talk too much.

There is nothing worse to an employer than someone who goes on and on and on… Keep your answers to-the-point and focused. Whatever you do, don’t ramble, don’t get sidetracked, and don’t start talking about your personal life (spouse, children, home life, etc.)

9.       Do ask questions.

When the employer asks, “Do you have any questions?” Yes, you do! If they haven’t said when they will make a decision, ask! Ask any questions you have or you might not get the chance again. It shows you care.

10.   Don’t forget to say thank you!

This one is often times forgotten. By saying thank you, shows the employer your interest in the job and how much you want it. A simple, “Thank you for taking the time to give me an opportunity,” can go a long ways.

  1. I love the 9th one. Ask Questions. I always find myself having a ton of questions, but not wanting to come off too forward. It’s good to know that questions help distinguish yourself from the rest of your competitors.
